13 Made For Oily Skin Foundations

Back to Blog

Shopping for foundation when you have oily skin makes an already challenging chore much more difficult. What's the trick to keeping your skin from looking shiny? Take a look at the list of components.

"For starters, oil-free is always a vital term to look for," explains makeup artist Neil Scibelli, "since it will allow your pores to breathe a bit easier." "Also, dimethicone, a common chemical in foundations, can function as a mattifying agent — just be sure to completely wash your face after use to avoid clogging your pores." Salicylic acid is another excellent grease inhibitor, but it should only be used if you have acne as well as oily skin.

When it comes to what sorts of foundations perform best, a powder foundation is the way to go because it absorbs excess oils. A mattifying cream or liquid is also an excellent alternative, but bear in mind that you'll have to reapply more frequently. "Cream foundation can't bond to your skin's natural oils," Scibelli explains, "so you may need a touch-up within a few hours." He also teaches how to prep skin with oil-free skincare so you have a lightweight canvas to work on, and how to use a willow bark or salicylic acid primer for optimum lasting power if you have troublesome skin. "Use a mattifying foundation solely in the t-zone and then buff it out to the outside portions of the skin with a BeautyBlender if you truly don't want your skin to feel heavy or weighted down by products," Scibelli continues.

What should you stay away from? Any tube that claims to provide a dewy or glowy finish. "Foundation with luminizing characteristics or even a smidgeon of shimmer just doesn't work with oily skin since the formula may start to bring out shine or even exaggerate pores within minutes," Scibelli explains.

Instead, try one of these thirteen foudations

1.

It Cosmetics

Bye Bye Foundation Full Coverage Oil-Free Matte with SPF 50+

A foundation that feels smothering is the last thing a person with oily skin wants. Fortunately, this tube combines the moisturizing advantages of a moisturizer, the full-coverage color of a foundation, and the sun protection of SPF.

2.

Bobbi Brown

Skin Long-Wear Fluid Powder Foundation SPF 20

This light foundation applies like a liquid foundation but dries like a powder. It protects against perspiration, the sun's rays, and blue light exposure in addition to mattifying characteristics.

3.

Huda Beauty

#FauxFilter Full Coverage Matte Foundation

Beauty vloggers understand the significance of avoiding shine for the camera, so it's no surprise that Huda Kattan's beauty brand has a top-notch foundation that even expert makeup artists adore. "It provides the complexion a beautiful matte, air-brush-like texture, and it's absolutely full-coverage," Scibelli affirms. "Her product is so pigmented that a dime-sized amount would cover your entire face." For a lighter appearance, use a primer or moisturizer."

4.

bareMinerals

Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15

This is the original mineral makeup, and there's a reason for that: Its lightweight texture, skin-perfecting pigments, and non-chemical sunscreen make it the ideal complexion saver, especially for delicate or acne-prone skin.

5.

CLINIQUE

Superbalanced Makeup Foundation

Your face might sometimes have two personalities: one that needs moisture and the other that has never met a blotting sheet it doesn't like. If that describes you, try this "smart" product that absorbs oil while also providing hydration where it's needed.

6.

Maybelline New York

Fit Me Shine-Free Balance Stick Foundation

This tiny stick is ideal for lunchtime makeup touch-ups or a post-workout skin repair, allowing you to nix shine on-the-go. This is due to its anti-shine powder core, which fights excess oil.

7.

Neutrogena

SkinClearing Mineral Powder

Meet the mineral compact infused with salicylic acid, which absorbs oil while simultaneously curing pimples and decreasing the appearance of flaws. Powder isn't your thing? The recipe is also available as a drink.

8.

FENTY BEAUTY by Rihanna

Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation

Rihanna has created a product that not only comes in fifty colors (from the lightest of light to the darkest, richest tone), but also reduces shine and has built-in climate adaptation technology (i.e., it's sweat and humidity resistant). Proof that love can be found in the most forlorn and oily of places.

9.

Burt's Bees

Mattifying Powder Foundation

"This natural mattifying powder is incredibly breathable and excellent for your skin," Scibelli says of this drugstore find. It also contains bamboo, which helps to hide imperfections and other lumps.

10.

Ilia

True Skin Serum Foundation

This serum-infused foundation is filled with face-boosting ingredients including soothing aloe, moisturizing plant-based squalane, and oil-fighting mastic, which refines the appearance of pores, in addition to its featherweight texture.

11.

Giorgio Armani

A matte finish might sometimes seem cakey, but that is not the case with this luxurious foundation. It glides on smoothly for a velvet-matte finish that won't make your face seem utterly flat like other mattifying formulations.
